Grand champion and provincial winners named in 2003 Malting Barley Quality Competition

James and Eileen Stanger of Drumheller, Alberta are the grand champion and two-row winners for Alberta/B.C. in this year’s Malting Barley Quality Competition (MBQC) held by the Barley Development Council (BDC). The provincial two-row winners for Saskatchewan are Ron and Glenda St. John from Kindersley with Ed and Jane Fielder from Spalding selected as the six-row winners for Saskatchewan. The provincial two-row winners for Manitoba are Tom and Laureen Fingas from Inglis and the Manitoba six-row winner is Sean Katchin from Angusville. No six-row winner was named for Alberta/B.C. Farmers are reminded that the deadline of October 31, 2003 is nearing for entering the Barley Development Council’s 2003 Malting Barley Quality Competition. Farmers are eligible to enter the competition if they grow two-row or six-row malting barley varieties from the Canadian Malting and Brewing Technical Centre’s 2003-04 Recommended List and their malting barley is selected by October 10, 2003.
